The Gulfโs rapid expansion of AI and data-centre infrastructure is creating a major challenge: how to provide enough cooling and power in one of the worldโs hottest and most water-stressed regions. Research on Gulf AI infrastructure highlights that conventional data-centre cooling can place significant pressure on both electricity and water resources.
One emerging idea is to use the regionโs surrounding seas for cooling. Deep seawater can provide a lower-temperature cooling source, while underwater data centres are also being explored internationally as a way to reduce freshwater consumption and cooling-energy requirements. Research cited by the Middle East Council on Global Affairs notes that seawater drawn from depths of 700 metres or more has demonstrated potential to reduce cooling electricity consumption, while submerged data centres are being tested by technology companies.
For Gulf countries, however, underwater or seawater-cooled AI infrastructure would involve significant engineering, connectivity, maintenance and environmental considerations. The broader issue is becoming increasingly important as the region seeks to expand AI and data-centre capacity while managing its energy and water constraints.
